Born in Kansas City, Kansas on September 3, 1956, to the Reverend S.J. Royal, Sr. and Mrs. Latona Thomas Royal. Converted and confessed Christ at the New Hope Baptist Church in Wichita, KS. Called to the Gospel Ministry in 1977 through the Greater St. James Baptist Church in Ft. Worth, TX. Ordained through the First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights in Washington, D. C. on November 26, 1983.

Married to Helene Kimbrough on September 29, 1990. They have two children, Anisa, and Averil Jr.
